Wb3Waktu Batu (Time Stone) is a contemporary theater work based on (inspired by) the mythology and history of Jawa juxtaposed with the transitional situation and problems of identity that are constructed by Indonesian modernity. Based on three basic themes: times, transitions and identity, Waktu Batu is a sort of anthropological trails on the problem of modernity/identity in Indonesian contemporary life.
The three mythological texts that were reinterpreted with(in) the Waktu Batu are: Watugunung, Murwakala, and Sudamala. The three Javanese mythologies tell of the origin of the Javanese calendar system, the birth of God of Time, and time as a threat in the view/culture of Javanese.
The texts on history used as creation base of Waktu Batu is a piece of historical periods in the range of XIV-XV centuries, when there was a tremendous and significant social and cultural shift (transition and transformation) in Jawa. This shifting is part of centuries of colonization throughout the archipelago, often referred to as the initial course of globalization in Indonesia.
The long work on field research and artistic exploration spent between 2001 – 2004 resulted to three theater pieces (versions): Waktu Batu#1 The Encountered Stories in Waiting Room, Waktu Batu#2 One Hundred Rites and Whose Face Cracked Up, and Waktu Batu #3 Deus Ex Machina And My Feelings For You.
Initiated and directed by Yudi Ahmad Tajudin, the last version Waktu Batu #3 had been performed in: Yogyakarta, Jakarta (Art Summit International Festival), Singapore (Insomnia 48), Berlin (In Transit Festival, Hause der Kulturen der Welt), and Tokyo (Morishita Studio, sponsored by KuNauka Theatre Company and The Saison Foundation).
